American streamer and YouTube star Darren Watkins Jr., popularly known as IShowSpeed, is set to receive a Ghanaian passport following the end of his popular “Speed Does Africa” tour.
Ghana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, announced on social media that the government had approved the passport after confirming what he described as IShowSpeed’s “irrefutable ties” to the country.
The minister described the 21-year-old as a “worthy ambassador” and encouraged him to continue promoting Ghana and Africa to the world.
“Keep making our great nation Ghana, and our beloved African continent proud. Ghana celebrates you,” he said.
IShowSpeed has more than 50 million YouTube subscribers and is one of the world’s most influential content creators. He celebrated his 21st birthday in Lagos, Nigeria, during the tour.
He was also named “Most Influential Creator of 2025” by Rolling Stone magazine. Forbes estimates his net worth at about $20 million.
During his visit to Ghana, IShowSpeed said his mother is of Ghanaian origin and added that being in the country made him feel “back home.”
The passport announcement followed a month-long tour across 20 African countries, where he live streamed local culture, food and daily life to millions of viewers worldwide.
The tour sparked online discussions about Africa’s diversity and heritage. While many praised the project, some criticised the decision to grant him a passport.
In Ghana, IShowSpeed took part in cultural activities, including a traditional naming ceremony in Akropong, where he was given the name Barima Kofi Akuffo. He also engaged with local personalities and fans.
The “Speed Does Africa” tour has been praised for promoting African cultures and increasing global interest in the continent. It has also strengthened IShowSpeed’s position as a major figure in global entertainment.
