Hon. Alabi Bliss Oshionogue, chairman of Akoko-Edo Local Government in Edo State, was impeached by seven councillors on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, following escalating tensions within the council.
The impeachment came after the Edo State House of Assembly failed to hold a peace meeting between Oshionogue and the seven councillors.
Sources said the move followed attempts by three councillors who skipped the planned meeting to remove the seven members, leading to their seats being declared vacant.
The seven councillors then convened at Igarra, the local government headquarters, and issued a formal impeachment letter.
The document cited “abuse of office, high-handedness, embezzlement of council funds, anti-party activities, financial recklessness, forgery, and persistent disobedience to constituted authorities” as grounds for his removal, effective immediately.
A video circulating on social media showed Oshionogue being booed as he exited office, highlighting public dissatisfaction amid the leadership dispute.
The development underscores continuing political friction within Edo State’s local government councils, raising questions about leadership stability and governance at the grassroots level.
