Bashir Ahmad, a former media aide to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, has condemned the Labour Party (LP) for giving its former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, a 48-hour ultimatum to resign or face expulsion. Ahmad described the demand as “disrespectful” and “ungrateful,” emphasizing Obi’s critical role in elevating the party to national prominence.
Ahmad, who made his remarks on X (formerly Twitter), acknowledged that while he doesn’t align with Obi’s ideologies, it’s undeniable that the party’s current momentum is largely due to Obi’s influence. “No exaggeration, but at least 75% of the party’s base and energy came from Peter Obi,” he stated. “You don’t treat the person who built your house like a visitor.”
The Julius Abure-led faction of the Labour Party had earlier dismissed Obi’s involvement in an emerging opposition coalition and issued the resignation threat, labeling coalition members as “power mongers” driven by personal ambition rather than public interest.
Meanwhile, Obi has continued to play a leading role in the opposition front, which recently adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as its political vehicle.
