Moshood Abiola National stadium will be fully operational by December — NSC

The chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Shehu Dikko, has assured Nigerians that the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja will be fully operational by December.

Speaking on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief, on Monday, May 26, Dikko said the commission is also working to concession major sports facilities and is engaging international partners to ensure upgrades meet global standards.

“If you look at the budget of the National Sports Commission, it’s up by over 300 percent. This is the best budget for sports in 60 years,” he stated.

He noted that funding is also available to renovate other stadiums across the country and to begin developing mini sports centers in communities nationwide.

According to Dikko, the administration of President Bola Tinubu has made a clear commitment to infrastructure development in the sports sector, emphasising that the increased funding is not merely for competitions but for long-term structural investments.

“It’s not just about building infrastructure,” he explained.

“We are developing entire ecosystems around the stadiums, including shopping malls, hotels, convention centers, amusement parks, and arenas, so that these facilities can generate revenue 24/7—not just on match days.”
