In a press statement released on Saturday, May 3, the university’s acting Information and Protocol Officer, Jaafar Abdullahi Abubakar, clarified that the deceased, 23-year-old Shebah Rilakwo Jatau, was not enrolled at NSUK.
Contrary to earlier reports on social media and some online platforms, Abubakar emphasized that the late Shebah was the son of a university staff member, Professor Benson Shedrack Jatau, and not a student of the institution.
“The Information and Protocol Unit of Nasarawa State University, Keffi, has been alerted to reports circulating in some online media outlets regarding the alleged death of a student of the University,” the statement began.
“We wish to categorically state that the individual in question… was not a student of Nasarawa State University, Keffi. He was the son of a staff member of the University,” it continued.
Shebah was discovered dead on April 27, 2025, in what has been described as an apparent suicide within the staff residential area of the university. He was laid to rest according to Christian rites on Thursday, May 1.
The university urged the public to disregard misleading reports and cautioned media outlets against spreading unverified information.
No further details have been provided regarding the circumstances of the incident, but the university assured the public that it remains committed to transparency and accurate communication.
