President Donald Trump announced Friday that he is “strongly considering” putting sanctions and tariffs on Russia unless a peace agreement is met with Ukraine.
Trump threatened the actions in a post on Truth Social.
“Based on the fact that Russia is absolutely “pounding” Ukraine on the battlefield right now, I am strongly considering large-scale Banking Sanctions, Sanctions, and Tariffs on Russia until a Cease Fire and FINAL SETTLEMENT AGREEMENT ON PEACE IS REACHED,” he wrote. “To Russia and Ukraine, get to the table right now, before it is too late. Thank you!!!”
It is the first time since taking office that Trump has issued a public threat against Russia after continuing to criticize President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and repeatedly claim Ukraine started the war.
Russia targeted Ukraine’s energy infrastructure overnight Thursday in a large-scale missile and drone bombardment. At least 10 people, including a child, were wounded, authorities said.
