A 40-year-old man, Elvis Mbekwe, has been arrested by the Ondo State Police Command for allegedly beating his 28-year-old girlfriend, Uchenna Akujobi, to death after an argument on Valentine’s Day turned violent.
The tragic incident reportedly occurred at Gold Line Estate, Ile-Oluji, in the Ile-Oluji/Oke-Igbo Local Government Area. According to investigators, Mbekwe became enraged after suspecting that Uchenna was involved in a romantic affair with another man who had visited her on Valentine’s Day.
Police reports indicate that during the altercation, Mbekwe allegedly assaulted Uchenna with his fists and a horsewhip, leading to her death. Following his arrest, he was charged with murder and arraigned before a Magistrates’ Court in Akure on February 26, 2025.
Prosecutor Folashade Adeyemi told the court that Mbekwe’s actions violated Sections 316 and 319(1) of the Criminal Code Laws of Ondo State, 2006. She requested that the defendant be remanded in custody pending legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
In his defense, Mbekwe claimed that Uchenna had attacked him first with a broken glass. However, Magistrate R.I. Adelakin ruled that there was sufficient probable cause for his remand at the Olokuta Correctional Centre while awaiting the DPP’s review.
The case was adjourned until March 27, 2025, for further mention.
